Morse and friends
As an accompaniment to my earlier post about Morse and loneliness, especially how he sees himself as more alone than he actually is, here are some photos of him with those who consider themselves his friends. All photos from IMdB.

watching lewis itv is wild bc in a reversal of the stereotypical sherlock/watson dynamic, the main detective is a normie with good social skills and regular hobbies and it’s the sidekick who is an insane autistic bisexual failed catholic priest with childhood trauma.

DS Hathaway: “Struggle with depression” would seem to imply that I am bad at being depressed when I am, in fact, very proficient at being depressed.

"Ah, well, you see, my sergeant's in a group. Apparently, it's world music with elements of jazz, rock and medieval madrigals."

Ludo is actually...
So maybe someone else has noticed this before and I've just missed it, but I kind of had a shock this weekend.
Tumblr media
As a librarian who has also done a lot of genealogy work, I've sort of ended up as my family's historian.  During an informal reunion this weekend I was asked to look up some information about a couple of relatives that emigrated from Belgium to America after WWI—in particular, a certain Uncle Louis.
For Belgium pre-WWI, your main resource in tracking where people were, who they married, what their children were called, and even what their professions were, are church records. And because Belgium was an overwhelmingly Catholic country, most of those records used not the common, everyday version of your name, but the official baptismal version of your name—the one in Latin.
What does this have to do with Uncle Louis? The Latin version of Louis—and thus his baptismal name—was Ludovicus. In Belgium, people with that baptismal name tend to go by Louis or Lodewijk or even Ludo in daily life.
Suddenly, bells went off in my head. If you're Italian and your baptismal name is Ludovicus, you would generally go by Luigi or Ludovico or Ludo in daily life.
However, what's most relevant here is that these are *all* forms of the same name: LEWIS! So in S7,  Morse's primary antagonist is given the same name as the man who will one day become his staunchest ally.
That's interesting…

Enjoying the "If DCI Morse had been nice I'd still be a Sergeant" scene in Lewis and suddenly remembering that Lewis actively deferred his promotion to Inspector so he could stay with Morse till the end

While openly talking about one's feelings is a fate worse than death, bagmen still require validation on a semi-regular basis to be their best and brightest selves!
To make sure your bagman does not start believing himself to be abandoned by God while you are not looking, consider periodically affirming how much he means to you (pro tip: putting a car in between can help ensure you do not endanger your hard-won English repression in the process!)

Men Endeavour Morse definitely slept with and other related matters...
(This is a selection of headcanons, obviously YMMV. :D )
Definitely slept with:
Tony Donn, when they were at Oxford together, probably a lot
Ludo Talenti
Jack Swift
Probably slept with:
Jerome Hogg, when they were at Oxford together
Peter Jakes, either prior to "Arcadia" or in s9
Would definitely have slept with if bad things hadn't happened to the man in question first:
Joss Bixby, and how
Nick Wilding
Would probably have slept with very frequently if the other man weren't in a monogamous marriage for the duration of their friendship:
Robbie Lewis
Didn't sleep with but probably should have done:
Jim Strange (it would have done a lot for both of them I think)
Didn't sleep with but I suspect the other man would have liked to:
George Fancy
Should not merely have slept with but got married to:
Max DeBryn (we know this to be true)
Not platonic or romantic or sexual but a secret fourth thing that was far more intense than everything else in this post, bloody hell:

My apologies for not having noted the original source of these gifs. Lewis gifs from @jameshathaways. Possibly also the IM gifs - if you know a different source, please let me know in comments so I can credit the maker accordingly.
With thanks to @greenapricot for the info.

DS Hathaway, sighing while looking at some academician: Wow, he is so handsome.
DI Lewis: Don’t be upset, James. You’re handsome too.
DS Hathaway: I’m not jealous, Robbie. I’m gay.

James/Robbie and sleeping in pretty please if you are inspired 🥺🙏
And I was inspired! Thank you for this! It's been literally years since I wrote and posted a fic in less than a week and it feels very good to know I still can.
_____
This, whatever it is between them, is new. A soft, delicate thing that neither of them has dared define or even mention outside the bedroom, though it has been many weeks since Robbie spent a night alone. It isn’t love, not yet, but Robbie can feel his heart leaning in that direction. Leaning toward James every chance he gets, to the point where he’s had to stop himself reaching out at crime scenes twice this past week.
But now, right now, there is no need to hold back. He shifts closer, brushing his fingers across James’ bare shoulder, his collarbone, feather-light so as not to wake him. James stirs anyway, a light sleeper at the best of times, turning toward him but not opening his eyes. Robbie presses a kiss where his fingers have just been.
Saturday morning and they’re off rota, nowhere they need to be until Monday. They could spend the whole weekend in bed if they want, but James will get restless eventually. Go for a run or a row. If Robbie has a say, and he does more than not these days, he’d choose a row. He’ll follow James to the river, help him get the scull into the water, then take a leisurely walk down the way to get them coffees and a couple of croissants. If he times it right, he’ll be sitting on a bench with still-warm coffee for James when he glides back downriver.
Read the rest on Ao3
(Also, I'm still taking prompts. James/Robbie, Jimmy/Duncan, Roy/Jamie, Roy/Jamie/Keeley.)
